6 key indicators of a successful job interview

After every job interview, you're likely to be bombarded with the same question: "How did it go?" While waiting for a response from the employer can be nerve-wracking, there are several subtle signs that suggest you made a great impression. Valentina Ciherean, senior recruitment consultant at Swiss recruitment specialist Robert Walters, shares insights on how to gauge the success of your interview.

1. The interview feels like a friendly conversation

One of the most promising signs of a successful interview is if it feels more like a friendly chat than a formal interrogation. "If your interviewer engages in a relaxed manner, smiles often, and asks additional questions about your skills and personality, it indicates genuine interest," says Valentina. 

This kind of interaction can give you an edge over other candidates. It shows that the interviewer sees potential compatibility not only with the role but also with the team and company culture. A conversational tone can also indicate that the interviewer is trying to build a rapport with you, which can be a precursor to a job offer.

2. The hiring manager shares insights about the company

If the hiring manager starts talking spontaneously about the company culture and the team you’d be working with, it’s a very positive sign. "This usually happens when there is serious interest in you as a candidate," explains Valentina. Providing you with a glimpse into the company's internal workings suggests they’re considering how you would fit into their environment.

The more detailed the information they provide about team dynamics, upcoming projects, or the company's future goals, the more invested they are in seeing how you could contribute to their success.

 

3. Positive body language from the interviewer

The interviewer’s body language can reveal much about how the interview is going. "Notice if the interviewer leans towards you, or even mirrors your body language," says Valentina. Such non-verbal cues indicate that the interviewer is engaged in the conversation, which is a sign you’re making a good impression. “Additional positive body language signs include nodding in agreement, smiling, and open gestures, such as uncrossed arms, which all suggest they are receptive to what you’re saying”, Valentina adds.

4. Request for references

If the interviewer requests your references' contact details during the interview, it's a clear indication that you’re a strong contender for the position. Valentina: “This step usually comes when they are ready to verify your qualifications and past performance, which means they are thinking about moving forward with you in the hiring process. It also signifies that they are considering the logistical steps of making an offer, pending positive feedback from your references.”

5. Discussion about your availability

When the interviewer inquires about your availability to start or asks if you have other applications pending, it's a positive indicator. "It means the interviewer is considering you for the role and wants to fine-tune practical details beforehand. This shows they’re thinking ahead about onboarding you. Additionally, questions about your notice period, willingness to relocate, or any upcoming commitments indicate that they are planning how you will transition into the role”, Valentina explains.

6. The interview takes longer than scheduled

If the interview lasts longer than planned, it's a sign of strong interest. Hiring Managers often have tight schedules, so if they’re willing to spend extra time with you, it suggests they see potential in you and want to learn more. Valentina: “An extended interview can mean they are eager to cover more ground, delve deeper into your experiences, and discuss more specific aspects of the job and your fit within the company. This additional time allows both parties to explore the potential working relationship more thoroughly, indicating mutual interest.”

While these signals do not guarantee you got the job, they can boost your confidence and positivity while you wait for an official response. Recognizing these signs can help you feel more assured about your performance and the impression you left on your potential employer.
