5 steps to a successful career plan
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced professional, a solid career plan is essential to set your future goals and steer your career in the right direction. Swiss recruitment specialist Robert Walters offers a clear step-by-step plan to get you started.
Step 1: Who am I?
Determine exactly what you want to do and how your personality, values and standards will affect it. Draw up a personal wish list by answering the following questions:
- What personality and lifestyle do I have?
- What do I like to do and what motivates me?
- According to those around me, what are my strengths and weaknesses
- What do I expect from a job in the first place?
Step 2: What skills do I have?
Evaluate your skills to determine the next step in your career. To do this, answer these questions:
- What qualities and experience do I possess?
- What have I achieved so far in my career?
- What skills and specific abilities can I take with me to the next challenge?
- What are my weaknesses and in what area do I still want to grow?
Step 3: Which direction do I want to take?
To determine the right direction, answer the following questions:
- Which sectors appeal to me?
- What positions do I aspire to?
- Is there a match with my personal preferences?
Step 4: When do I want to achieve this?
Decide how and within what timeframe you want to achieve your goals by answering these questions:
- What do I want to achieve and within what timeframe?
- Do I need additional training or education and how long will it take?
- Do I need to expand my network and, if so, how?
- How and within what timeframe can I acquire the necessary skills?
Step 5: How is my career progressing?
Regularly evaluate your career plan to make progress and adapt to changed personal or economic circumstances. This will increase your chances of success.
