4 tips to overcome procrastination today
Busy times filled with deadlines and increased workloads can be particularly challenging for those who struggle with procrastination. Do you find yourself making excuses to delay tasks at home or work? Have you missed payments because you kept putting them off? If so, you're not alone. Procrastination can frustrate colleagues and loved ones, especially during hectic times. To help you combat procrastination, Swiss recruitment specialist Robert Walters shares 4 practical tips.
1. Organize your tasks in steps
To overcome procrastination, start by acknowledging that you need to make a change. Identify the times of day when you are most productive and create a detailed to-do list. Prioritize tasks based on their importance and urgency, and estimate the time needed for each. Break tasks down into detailed steps to make them less daunting.
Avoid overestimating to prevent discouragement.
Initiating tasks is often the hardest part. Establish rituals to help you start promptly. For example, initiate the reimbursement process immediately after making a payment, eliminating a task from your list. Review and update your to-do list each night to stay on track for the next day.
2. Avoid distractions
Distractions are everywhere: phones, emails, social media, TV, colleagues. To combat procrastination, set aside dedicated time to focus on your tasks without unnecessary screens. This will help you maintain concentration and efficiency.
For instance, if you need to finish a report by tomorrow, turn off phone and computer notifications to avoid multitasking. Isolate yourself in a quiet environment to stay focused. Check emails at scheduled times or after completing tasks to manage responses without delaying them.
3. Reward yourself and take breaks
When facing a large project with a looming deadline, break it into stages and decide how many tasks to complete in each phase. After finishing each phase, reward yourself. This could be a small treat or a break, which will refresh your mind and keep you motivated.
Scheduling breaks between tasks can also serve as rewards, providing clarity and maintaining your drive to achieve your goals.
4. Don’t be too hard on yourself
Remember, procrastination is a common human behavior. Instead of blaming yourself, celebrate your accomplishments and the steps you’ve taken towards improvement. Focus on small, quick actions to build momentum and keep you energized. Prioritize good sleep, a balanced diet, and regular exercise to help reduce procrastination.
No more excuses—everyone can tackle procrastination. Start today and make a change!
