Aiming for a promotion in January? Here are 4 steps to take in Q4

Looking to land a well-deserved promotion in January? Now is the time to take action! The fourth quarter (Q4) is your prime opportunity to position yourself for success and advance your career. Swiss recruitment specialist Robert Walters shares 4 essential steps to maximise Q4 and boost your chances of securing that promotion.

1. Eyes on the ball

Review the projects you want to wrap up this year and the objectives you need to achieve. Revisit the targets set during your January review and create a detailed action plan to complete them. Robert Walters advises: If you haven’t already discussed your progress in a mid-year review, now is the time to arrange a meeting with your manager. This proactive step gives you time to seek guidance or support to reach your goals, which will reflect positively during your evaluation.

2. Stay flexible

If you’re aiming for a higher-level role, now is the moment to show your readiness. Be open to new tasks and challenges, tackling them head-on. A flexible attitude can help you achieve quick wins that will work in your favor during your January review.

3. Sharpen your skills

Promotions often come with new responsibilities and skill requirements. Identify the key skills for the role you aspire to and start developing them. Q4 is the perfect time to upskill. Whether it’s attending training sessions or enrolling in an evening course, showing initiative will not go unnoticed by your manager.

4. Raise your profile

To get promoted, visibility matters.

Don’t just limit yourself to interactions with your manager and direct team but build connections across the organization.

Seek out colleagues who’ve advanced in their careers for valuable advice. Attending company events or helping organize them in Q4. Your efforts will be recognized by leadership.
