Moving from practice into commerce
As a practice accountant, your career to date has probably been centred on audit – reviewing clients’ finance and operations reports to determine their financial validity. As part of this you have to fill out daily timesheets recording each minute spent working on each client.
It can often seem mundane and less exciting then the prospect of working for one company where you will be able to use your financial expertise to shape management decision making and strategically maximise profitability.
Differences between accounting roles in practice and commerce and industry
Opportunities can come up at any time so it’s important you are ready and willing to make the move.
Firstly it’s important you understand current market trends – what industries are hiring strongly and which skill sets are in demand. This will give you an understanding of the opportunities available in the market and the competition for jobs.
Secondly, register with a specialised accounting and finance recruitment agency. The recruitment agency will be able to offer advice on market trends, salary, what industries best suit you, and how to present your CV so it is relevant to accounting roles in commerce and industry.
