Responsibilities and Day Rate of an Interim HR Transformation Lead

When the head of HR becomes unavailable at short notice, important HR responsibilities still need to be managed. An Interim HR Manager or HR Director takes on this responsibility for a limited period. They lead the HR team, advise senior management and ensure that the HR function remains fully operational.

There are many reasons why an interim appointment may be required: a key position is vacant, the company is undergoing a reorganisation, or structures need to be integrated following an acquisition. Setting up a new HR department, implementing an HR system or redesigning processes may also require external support.

An Interim HR Manager or HR Director combines responsibility for day-to-day operations with the ongoing development of the HR function. They set priorities, establish clear responsibilities and oversee important projects. This gives the company rapid access to experienced leadership without making a long-term commitment.

In Switzerland, knowledge of the local labour market and employment law framework is particularly important. Depending on the company, different language regions, international requirements and multiple locations may also need to be taken into account. Experienced Interim Managers are familiar with comparable situations and can therefore get up to speed quickly.

What does an Interim HR Manager or HR Director do?

An Interim HR Manager or HR Director temporarily assumes responsibility for leading the HR function. They manage the team, coordinate with senior management and ensure that key HR matters are handled reliably. These include recruitment, HR administration, employee relations, compensation, employee development and collaboration with external partners.

Unlike an Interim HR Business Partner, they are responsible not only for advising a particular business area, but for the entire HR function. An Interim HR Transformation Lead, by contrast, focuses on leading a broader transformation programme and does not necessarily take responsibility for day-to-day HR operations.

The precise scope of responsibility depends on the size and structure of the company. An Interim HR Manager is often more closely involved in day-to-day operations and direct team leadership. An Interim HR Director generally takes on additional responsibility for strategic direction, international matters and larger-scale transformation projects.

Responsibilities of an Interim HR Manager or HR Director

Key responsibilities include leading the HR team, advising senior management, and workforce and succession planning. The interim HR leader sets priorities, assigns responsibilities and keeps track of budgets, deadlines and key metrics.

During reorganisations or integrations, they prepare decisions, coordinate HR-related activities and support managers in difficult conversations. At the same time, they ensure clear communication and work closely with Finance, the legal department and employee representatives.

If the HR function is to be reorganised, the Interim HR Manager or HR Director reviews existing structures and processes. They identify where adjustments are needed, develop an appropriate target operating model and oversee its implementation. A thorough handover ensures that the internal team can successfully continue the work once the assignment has ended.

What are the current challenges for an Interim HR Manager or HR Director?

Interim assignments often begin during periods of intense time pressure. Day-to-day operations need to continue while significant changes are taking place at the same time. Senior management expects rapid results, the HR team needs clear leadership, and employees want decisions they can understand. The Interim HR Manager or HR Director therefore establishes priorities early on and creates reliable processes.

Another key area is the digital development of the HR function. New HR systems and self-service solutions are changing processes and responsibilities. Artificial intelligence is also becoming increasingly important in recruitment and workforce planning. Data quality, transparency and the protection of personal data must therefore be considered from the outset.

Companies also need to retain critical skills and develop employees in a targeted way. The HR leadership team supports this by determining future workforce requirements, planning succession and creating internal development opportunities. In international organisations, global requirements must also be adapted appropriately to the Swiss location.

Restructurings, mergers and acquisitions are particularly challenging. In these situations, the interim HR leader needs to build trust quickly and make decisions even when information is incomplete. They balance commercial objectives, legal requirements and employees’ needs.

What does an Interim HR Manager or HR Director need to bring to the role?

Successful Interim HR Managers and HR Directors have several years of leadership and management experience within HR. They have previously supported reorganisations, integrations or other transformation projects across different companies. They are also familiar with every stage of the employment lifecycle.

They bring extensive HR experience, understand commercial interdependencies and are able to derive clear priorities from complex situations. Strong decision-making skills, the ability to handle conflict and confidence in dealing with senior management, employees and external partners are also important.

Knowledge of Swiss employment law and the local labour market is essential, particularly when managing workforce changes. Depending on the company, proficiency in German, French and English, as well as experience in international structures, may be required. An academic background in business administration, psychology, law or Human Resources often provides the foundation. Further qualifications in change management, employment law or project management complement the profile.

What is the day rate of an Interim HR Manager or HR Director?

The day rate for an Interim HR Manager or HR Director in Switzerland is generally between CHF 1,200 and CHF 1,800. The exact rate depends on factors including experience, scope of responsibility, company size, industry, location and the complexity of the assignment.

A local HR management role is often positioned towards the lower to middle end of this range. Where the role involves international responsibility, managing a large team or extensive transformation projects, the day rate may be higher.

For companies, engaging an interim professional is particularly beneficial when experienced leadership is required at short notice. They gain immediately available expertise, additional capacity and an independent perspective. This ensures that the HR function remains stable while important projects continue to move forward.
